Celebrex Rash: What You Should Know

Celebrex contains celecoxib, and a new rash after starting it can reflect a drug eruption. The appearance may range from scattered red or itchy patches to raised spots or areas that blister. Timing matters: tell the clinician when the medicine was started, when the rash appeared, and whether the dose changed. A rash can also have an unrelated cause, such as contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, or another inflammatory skin condition. A photograph taken in good light can help document changes.

Do not restart Celebrex or substitute another anti-inflammatory without advice from the prescriber or pharmacist. Make a list of every medicine, supplement, and recently used skin product, including anything started shortly before the rash. Use gentle fragrance-free cleansing, avoid scratching, and keep the skin cool. Do not apply a leftover steroid or antibiotic cream unless a clinician has told you to use it for this episode. If the rash is mild and you feel well, arrange prompt clinical advice so the suspected reaction is recorded and a safer pain-relief plan can be considered.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat; trouble breathing; faintness; or rapidly spreading hives. Get urgent assessment for fever, feeling very unwell, skin pain, blistering, peeling, sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rash involving many areas. These features can signal a serious medicine reaction and should not be watched at home. Until assessed, avoid taking another dose and bring the medicine packaging or an accurate medication list.

Ask whether the rash is consistent with a drug eruption, whether Celebrex should be listed as a suspected allergy, and which pain medicines are reasonable alternatives. Also ask whether you need an examination, photographs, or follow-up if the rash changes.
