Cedar fever symptoms: how to recognise them

Cedar pollen allergy can inflame the lining of the nose and eyes. Alongside sneezing and congestion, a person may notice an itchy palate, watery or red eyes, coughing from drainage, reduced concentration, or disturbed sleep. Symptoms often appear or worsen outdoors or during the pollen season and usually do not include the profound muscle aches associated with some infections. A true fever is not a defining feature, so check it rather than assuming the name explains it.

Track when symptoms flare and reduce exposure by closing windows during heavy pollen, showering after outdoor time, and changing clothes before bed. Saline nasal rinsing can remove irritants when safe water is used. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an antihistamine or nasal treatment that fits your age, pregnancy status, medical conditions, and current medicines. If coughing or wheezing occurs, mention it rather than treating it as nasal allergy alone.

Book a review if symptoms are persistent, disrupt sleep, limit activity, or return frequently despite self-care. A clinician can consider allergy, asthma, infection, or another cause. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, wheezing with chest tightness, swelling of the mouth or throat, faintness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening reaction. Seek prompt advice for a high or persistent measured fever, severe facial pain, or feeling significantly unwell.
