Cedar fever: what it is and what to do

Despite its name, cedar fever is not usually a fever-producing infection. Pollen can trigger inflammation in the nose, eyes, and upper airways, leading to repeated sneezing, watery eyes, post-nasal drip, cough, or tiredness from poor sleep. Symptoms often follow outdoor exposure and may recur during the local pollen season. A true measured fever, body aches, or marked deterioration suggests another illness may also be present.

Keep windows closed when pollen is heavy, change clothes after outdoor activities, shower before bed, and rinse pollen from the face and hair. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants when done with safe prepared or properly treated water. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on antihistamines or nasal treatments, especially for children, pregnancy, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, or other medicines. Avoid driving until you know how a new medicine affects you.

Arrange a medical review if symptoms interfere with sleep, work, or exercise, persist despite reasonable measures, or are difficult to distinguish from an infection. Seek urgent help for wheezing, chest tightness, swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or blue-grey lips. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction or an asthma flare.
