Short answer

Cholera is an intestinal infection that can cause sudden watery diarrhoea and dangerous fluid loss, so rapid rehydration and medical care are essential.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cholera means

Cholera is caused by bacteria acquired through contaminated food or water. It can produce large-volume watery diarrhoea, vomiting, thirst, muscle cramps and weakness. The main danger is dehydration: the body loses water and salts faster than they can be replaced. Dry mouth, dizziness, reduced urination, sunken eyes, unusual sleepiness or a fast heartbeat can signal worsening fluid loss.

What to do now

Start Oral Rehydration Therapy if advised and take frequent small sips while arranging medical assessment. Use a correctly prepared oral rehydration solution rather than relying on plain water alone, because salts help the intestine absorb fluid. Keep food and drinking water separate from contaminated sources, wash hands carefully and follow local clinical advice. Severe dehydration may require IV Fluid Therapy in a medical setting.

When to seek care

Treat suspected cholera as urgent, especially when diarrhoea is frequent, vomiting prevents drinking, urination falls, the person is confused or faint, or the skin and mouth become very dry. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with chronic illness can deteriorate quickly and should be assessed without delay. Do not wait for diarrhoea to stop before replacing fluids.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which rehydration method is appropriate, how to recognise worsening dehydration, whether testing or antibiotics are needed, and how to protect others from contaminated food, water or hands.

Questions people ask

Is cholera diarrhoea always painful?

It may occur with cramps or vomiting, but watery diarrhoea can also be relatively painless while still causing serious fluid loss.

When are IV fluids used?

IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when dehydration is severe or vomiting prevents adequate oral rehydration.
