What should you know about cavitary nodules in lungs?

A nodule is a small area seen on lung imaging. When it is described as cavitary, part of it appears hollow or contains air. The wall, shape, position, and change over time help a clinician judge what tests are useful. Causes can include bacterial or fungal infection, inflammatory disease, an old healed process, or cancer. The scan description alone cannot establish the cause.

Arrange a review with the clinician who requested the scan. Bring earlier chest images if available, and mention smoking history, travel, immune conditions, recent infections, weight change, and any exposure to dust or tuberculosis. Assessment may involve a repeat scan, blood tests, sputum testing, or referral to a respiratory specialist. Do not start antibiotics or steroids without advice.

Seek urgent care for coughing blood, severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, fainting, or confusion. Prompt medical review is also appropriate for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, worsening cough, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms do not identify one cause, but they can signal a need for faster evaluation.

Ask what the nodule’s size, wall appearance, and location suggest; whether an older scan can be compared; which tests are appropriate; and when the result should be reviewed.
