What causes persistent belching?
Persistent belching is often related to swallowed air, reflux, stomach irritation, or another digestive problem, and its cause depends on accompanying symptoms. Belching can increase when you eat quickly, talk while eating, chew gum, drink through a straw, or have fizzy drinks. Repeated belching may also occur with acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or irritable bowel syndrome. A clinician can look at the pattern, associated symptoms, medicines, and diet rather than relying on belching alone.
What persistent belching may mean
Swallowed air is a common explanation when belching is linked with fast eating, gum chewing, smoking, anxiety-related air swallowing, or carbonated drinks. Burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, or food coming back up can fit with acid reflux. Upper-abdominal discomfort, nausea, or early fullness may point to stomach irritation such as gastritis. Bloating, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits can occur with irritable bowel syndrome. Helicobacter pylori infection can irritate the stomach and may need testing when symptoms persist or recur. These symptoms overlap, so they do not identify one condition by themselves.
Medicines, food intolerance, constipation, and habits that increase air swallowing can also contribute. Note whether symptoms began after a new medicine or follow particular foods.
What you can do
Try slower meals, smaller mouthfuls, and thorough chewing. Reduce fizzy drinks, chewing gum, hard sweets, and drinking through straws for a short period to see whether air swallowing decreases. Keep a simple record of meals, belching, heartburn, abdominal pain, bowel changes, and medicines. Avoid stopping a prescribed medicine without medical advice. If symptoms continue, a clinician may review your history, examine your abdomen, and decide whether tests or treatment for reflux, stomach irritation, or infection are appropriate.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical appointment if belching is persistent, disruptive, worsening, or accompanied by ongoing pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, black stools, or a lasting change in bowel habits. Seek urgent help for severe chest or abdominal pain, vomiting blood, fainting, breathing difficulty, or a swollen and very tender abdomen. Chest discomfort can have causes outside the digestive system, so do not assume it is reflux.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what features make reflux, gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, or another digestive cause more likely; whether any of your medicines can worsen belching; whether testing is needed; and which food or air-swallowing changes are worth trying. Bring your symptom record, including timing, triggers, heartburn, nausea, pain, and bowel changes.

Questions people ask
Can reflux cause persistent belching?
Yes. Belching with heartburn, a sour taste, or regurgitation can occur with acid reflux, although those symptoms can have other explanations.
When should persistent belching be checked?
Arrange an assessment when it continues, interferes with daily life, or occurs with pain, vomiting, swallowing difficulty, weight loss, black stools, or bowel changes.
What can reduce belching at home?
Eating slowly and limiting fizzy drinks, gum, hard sweets, and straws may reduce swallowed air. Keep a symptom record to identify personal triggers.
