What causes a pulled muscle?

Short answer
A muscle pull happens when muscle fibres are stretched or loaded beyond what they can tolerate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What causes a muscle pull?
It may occur during a sudden sprint, lift, twist or awkward movement. Tired, tight or insufficiently warmed-up muscles can be less prepared for rapid force. A direct impact can also damage fibres.
What a pulled muscle means
A pulled muscle is another name for a muscle strain. The injury can range from irritated or overstretched fibres to a more substantial tear. Pain often begins during the provoking movement and may be accompanied by tenderness, swelling, bruising, weakness or difficulty using the nearby joint.
Cramp and post-exercise soreness can feel muscular but do not always reflect torn fibres. The timing, exact location, loss of strength and examination findings help distinguish them.
What to do after the injury
Stop the activity that triggered sharp pain and protect the area from heavy loading. Relative rest, a wrapped cold pack for comfort and gentle movement within a tolerable range may help early on. Avoid forceful stretching or testing the muscle repeatedly.
As pain settles, restore movement and strength gradually. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide progression when weakness persists, the injury affects walking or work, or you are unsure how much activity is appropriate.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt assessment if there was a snap, a visible gap or deformity, extensive bruising, marked weakness, worsening swelling, or an inability to bear weight or use the limb. Seek urgent care for numbness, a cold or unusually pale limb, severe unrelenting pain, or an injury associated with major trauma.
Medical review is also sensible when symptoms keep worsening, interfere with normal function, or fail to improve with a cautious return to movement.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which muscle appears injured, whether the tendon may also be involved, what movements are safe now, and what signs should delay a return to sport or work. You can also ask whether examination alone is sufficient or whether imaging would change management.

Questions people ask
Is a pulled muscle the same as a strain?
Yes. Both terms describe injury caused when muscle fibres are overstretched or overloaded; severity can vary considerably.
Should I stretch a pulled muscle immediately?
Forceful early stretching can aggravate pain. Begin with comfortable movement, then add flexibility and strengthening progressively as symptoms allow.
Can fatigue contribute to a muscle pull?
Yes. A fatigued muscle may control force and movement less effectively, particularly during fast or demanding activity.
