What causes intertrigo?

The rash can affect the groin, underarms, under the breasts, abdominal folds, or between the buttocks. Sweat and trapped moisture soften the skin, while movement creates rubbing. Tight clothing, warm weather, reduced mobility, and larger or deeper folds can make the cycle easier to maintain. Once the barrier is irritated, a skin yeast infection or bacterial overgrowth may add soreness, odour, satellite spots, or weeping. An itchy groin or other skin rash can have causes besides intertrigo, so appearance alone is not always enough.

Wash gently, pat folds fully dry, change damp clothing, and choose breathable fabrics. Keep opposing surfaces separated with a clean dry layer if advised, and avoid fragranced products on raw skin. A clinician may suggest topical antifungal treatment when yeast is involved. If sweating repeatedly drives symptoms, prescription antiperspirant may be discussed, but it should not be applied to broken skin without guidance.

Get medical advice if the area is painful, cracked, foul-smelling, draining, spreading, or not improving with gentle drying measures. Fever, rapidly increasing redness, or feeling unwell warrants prompt assessment because another infection may be present. Repeated flares deserve review for contributing skin conditions and a prevention plan.
