What causes chondrosarcoma?

Chondrosarcoma is a cancer that produces cartilage-like tissue, usually within or next to bone. The abnormal cells continue dividing and form a tumour. The cell changes involved may arise during life rather than being inherited, so having the diagnosis does not by itself mean relatives face the same risk.

Certain uncommon inherited disorders that cause multiple cartilage growths can increase susceptibility. Some chondrosarcomas also arise from a pre-existing benign cartilage tumour, although most such growths do not become cancerous. An injury may draw attention to pain or swelling but is not generally considered the cause of this cancer.

Arrange an assessment for deep bone pain that persists or worsens, a growing lump, swelling, or reduced movement near a joint. Evaluation commonly involves examination and imaging. When a tissue sample is needed, planning it with a specialist bone-tumour team matters because the biopsy route can affect later surgery.

A confirmed diagnosis is classified by its location, cell appearance and extent. Tumour removal surgery is often central to treatment planning. Selected tumours may prompt discussion of specialised radiation approaches, including proton therapy, depending on anatomy and whether surgery can remove the disease safely.

Seek prompt medical evaluation if pain becomes severe, a mass enlarges noticeably, or limb function deteriorates. Go to emergency care for sudden inability to bear weight, a possible fracture, new weakness or numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Those neurological symptoms can signal pressure on nerves or the spinal cord and should not wait for a routine visit.

Ask what the imaging shows, whether a biopsy should be performed at the treating centre, and what subtype and grade were found. It is also useful to ask whether genetic counselling fits your personal or family history and how treatment could affect movement, strength or nearby nerves.
