What should you know about causative organism for cholera?

Vibrio cholerae is acquired when contaminated water or food reaches the mouth. In the small intestine, the bacterium releases a toxin that changes how cells handle salt and water. The bowel then sends excess fluid into the intestine, producing profuse watery diarrhoea; vomiting can make dehydration worse. The organism can spread when hands, utensils, or food contact faecal material. This is why clean water, sanitation, handwashing, and careful food preparation are central to prevention.

Begin oral rehydration solution as soon as possible if the person is awake and able to drink. Offer small, repeated sips and continue usual feeding or breastfeeding when tolerated. Use safe water and separate towels and utensils until medical advice is obtained. A clinician may arrange stool testing and assess hydration. When drinking is not enough or vomiting prevents replacement, IV fluid therapy may be needed urgently.

Get urgent medical help for ongoing watery diarrhoea with weakness, dizziness, confusion, sunken eyes, a dry mouth, or reduced urination. Go immediately if the person cannot drink, repeatedly vomits, faints, becomes hard to wake, or has breathing changes. Infants and frail adults need a low threshold for assessment because fluid loss can progress before thirst is obvious.
