What should you know about castor oil cradle cap?

Short answer

Castor oil is not a preferred first treatment for cradle cap because it can be difficult to remove and may irritate a baby’s delicate scalp.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Greasy or flaky scale on a baby’s scalp
Product caution
Thick oils can be hard to wash away and may irritate
Gentle approach
Soften and brush loose scale without picking

What cradle cap means

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, produces greasy yellow, white, or brown scale on the scalp. The skin may look mildly red, but babies are often otherwise comfortable. Scale can cling to the scalp and may extend to the eyebrows or behind the ears. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not a reason to scrub vigorously.

Castor oil may soften scale temporarily, but its thick texture can leave residue, attract dirt, and make washing difficult. Any new product can trigger irritation or a rash, especially when it reaches the eyes or broken skin.

Gentle care at home

Use a small amount of a mild, fragrance-free baby cleanser during bathing. After washing, a soft brush or washcloth can loosen scale that is already lifting; never scratch, pick, or pull attached flakes. Keep products away from the eyes and stop if the scalp becomes more red or sore. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using medicated products on an infant.

A clinician may recommend [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) when moisturising care is appropriate. If scale is persistent or another diagnosis is possible, [Topical Antifungal Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antifungal-therapy/) may be discussed. Use only the product, amount, and duration advised for your baby’s age and skin.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, cracked, bleeding, painful, or leaking fluid, or if your baby has fever or seems unwell. Arrange assessment when the rash spreads widely, causes significant itching, affects feeding or sleep, or does not improve with gentle care. Yellow crusting with tenderness may indicate infection rather than uncomplicated cradle cap.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the scale fits cradle cap, whether castor oil should be stopped, and which cleanser or emollient is suitable for your baby. Ask how to loosen stubborn scale safely, how long to try the plan, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Can I use castor oil on my baby’s cradle cap?

It is better to ask a clinician first; castor oil is thick, difficult to remove, and may irritate delicate infant skin.

Should I scrape off cradle cap scales?

No. Wash gently and brush only scale that is already loose, because scraping can damage the scalp.
