Cast for a Humerus Fracture: Care and Warning Signs

Short answer
A humerus fracture may be supported with a splint, cast, sling, or functional brace, depending on the break's location and alignment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- Function to monitor
- Wrist and finger movement and hand sensation
Which support is used for a humerus fracture?
A full cast is not suitable for every upper-arm fracture. The shoulder is difficult to immobilise completely, so clinicians often select a support that controls the fracture while allowing safe care of the elbow, wrist, and hand. Surgery may be considered when alignment, stability, skin injury, or nerve and blood-vessel findings make non-surgical care unsuitable.
How the arm is held during healing
The support aims to reduce painful movement and help the broken ends remain in an acceptable position. Swelling can change the fit, which is why an initial splint may later be exchanged for another device.
Regular checks assess fracture alignment as well as the radial nerve, which helps lift the wrist and fingers and supplies sensation to part of the hand. Shoulder and elbow stiffness can develop when the arm is protected, so movement is introduced only when the treating team considers it safe.
Looking after the arm
Wear the sling, brace, or cast as fitted and do not adjust straps or padding unless shown how. Support the forearm and keep rings off the injured-side hand while swelling is present. Move the fingers gently and perform only the shoulder or elbow exercises specifically approved for you.
Keep rigid cast material dry and inspect visible skin for rubbing. Avoid lifting, pushing, pulling, or leaning through the injured arm. Attend imaging appointments even when pain improves, because position and bone healing guide the next stage of care.
Symptoms that need prompt assessment
Get urgent help if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, increasingly swollen, numb, or weak. New inability to lift the wrist or straighten the fingers also needs prompt assessment because a nerve may be affected.
Severe pain that keeps escalating, a brace or cast that feels dangerously tight, skin breakdown, drainage, fever, or a new change in the shape of the arm warrants medical review. Emergency care is appropriate for breathing difficulty or chest pain after a significant injury.
Planning the next stage
Ask where the break sits, whether alignment remains acceptable, and which joints you should move now. Clarify sleeping position, bathing, work and driving restrictions, the expected follow-up schedule, and when physiotherapy or strengthening can begin.

Questions people ask
Why might I have a brace instead of a full cast?
A functional brace can control the upper arm while accommodating its shape and allowing selected joint movement. Suitability depends on the fracture pattern, alignment, skin, and your ability to use the brace correctly.
Should I exercise my fingers while the arm is supported?
Gentle finger movement is commonly encouraged to limit swelling and stiffness, unless your clinician has given a different restriction. Stop and seek advice if movement causes marked pain or new numbness.
Can I sleep lying flat with a humerus fracture?
Many people are more comfortable partly upright with the injured arm supported by pillows. Confirm the safest position for your particular support, and never place pressure directly over the fracture.
