Carpal Ligament Sprain

Short answer
A carpal ligament sprain is an overstretch or tear of tissue that stabilises the small bones of the wrist.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Affected area
- Ligaments connecting and stabilising the small wrist bones.
- Early priority
- Protect the wrist and rule out fracture or instability.
- Rehabilitation
- Movement and loading are usually progressed according to symptoms and stability.
The short answer
It may follow a fall, twist, forceful grip, or sporting impact and can cause local pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, weakness, or clicking. An examination is useful because a fracture or a more significant ligament injury can feel similar.
Why an accurate assessment matters
The carpal bones move together through several small joints. Ligaments guide that motion and keep the bones aligned during gripping, pushing, and rotation. Injury severity ranges from irritated fibres with preserved stability to a tear that allows abnormal movement.
A clinician checks the painful location, swelling, grip, movement, circulation, sensation, and wrist stability. Imaging may be considered when the examination suggests bone injury, altered alignment, or damage that needs a different treatment plan.
What to do after a wrist injury
Pause lifting, gripping, racquet sports, and weight-bearing through the hand. Support the wrist in a comfortable neutral position, elevate it if swollen, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods without placing ice directly on skin.
A clinician may recommend a splint for protection and later guide gradual movement and strengthening. Avoid repeatedly testing painful motion. Return to demanding hand use only as comfort, movement, grip, and professional guidance allow.
When to seek prompt care
Seek urgent assessment after a wrist injury if there is deformity, an open wound, severe swelling, uncontrolled pain, inability to move the fingers, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, blue, or numb. Remove rings early if swelling is developing and they can be taken off safely.
Arrange clinical review when pain is focused over a bone, the wrist repeatedly gives way or clicks painfully, grip remains weak, or symptoms fail to improve. Continuing to load an unstable wrist can aggravate the injury.
Questions to ask at your appointment
Ask which structure seems injured, whether the wrist appears stable, and whether imaging is appropriate. Clarify how long to use support, which movements to practise, when physiotherapy may help, and what signs should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask
Is a carpal ligament sprain the same as a fracture?
No. A sprain affects a ligament, while a fracture affects bone, but the symptoms can overlap and sometimes both occur together.
Should I wear a wrist splint?
A splint may protect a painful wrist, but its fit and duration should match the suspected injury. A tight splint that causes numbness, colour change, or worsening pain needs prompt adjustment.
Can exercise help recovery?
Guided movement and strengthening can restore function once the wrist is ready. Exercises that provoke sharp pain, giving way, or persistent swelling should be reassessed.
