What should you know about carbon laser peel lips?

A carbon laser peel places a carbon lotion on the skin, then uses laser energy to heat and remove the coating. Around the lips, the clinician must distinguish the outer skin from the wet inner lip and protect the mouth and eyes. The treatment may help surface roughness or oiliness, but it does not diagnose or treat every cause of lip discoloration, scaling, cracking, or sores.

Tell the clinician about cold sores, active lip irritation, dermatitis, recent fillers or other procedures, medicines that affect healing or light sensitivity, and any history of dark marks after inflammation. Treatment should not be performed over an active cold sore or broken skin unless a qualified clinician gives a specific plan. Ask exactly where the carbon product will be placed and how the lips will be shielded.

After treatment, use only the recommended bland cleanser and moisturiser, protect the area from sunlight, and avoid picking flakes or applying irritating acids, retinoids, fragranced products, or makeup until advised. Keep the product away from the mouth and follow instructions about lip balm.

Contact the provider for worsening pain, blistering, crusting, pus, spreading redness, or swelling that interferes with eating. Urgent care is needed for facial swelling with breathing difficulty, eye pain, or vision changes. New grouped blisters or recurrent tingling may indicate a cold sore and should be assessed promptly.
