What should you know about canine ringworm treatment?

Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm. In dogs it can cause circular or irregular areas of hair loss, crusting, redness, itching, or scaling. The appearance can resemble other skin problems, so a veterinarian may examine hairs or skin samples before choosing treatment. People and other animals can catch it through contact with an infected coat or contaminated bedding, brushes, and surfaces.

A rash or scaly skin change does not confirm ringworm by itself. The condition may occur on the face, ears, paws, or body, and young or immunocompromised animals may need closer monitoring.

Follow the prescribed topical antifungal treatment exactly, including how often it is applied and how long it continues. Some dogs also need oral antifungal treatment when infection is widespread, persistent, or difficult to reach with topical medicine. Do not use human creams, leftover medicine, or harsh disinfectants on the animal unless a veterinarian approves them.

Wash hands after handling the dog, launder bedding, clean grooming tools, and vacuum areas where hair collects. Keep the dog’s living area easy to clean and follow advice about contact with children, older adults, and other pets.

Arrange veterinary care for new hair loss, spreading patches, broken skin, or persistent scaling, especially when another animal or person has a similar rash. Seek prompt help if the dog is weak, stops eating, develops painful swelling, or has discharge from affected skin. Contact the clinic if lesions continue to spread despite treatment or if medicine causes vomiting, marked lethargy, or another concerning reaction.
