What should you know about canine ringworm?

Ringworm is not caused by a worm. It can produce an expanding, ring-shaped or uneven rash with a more active scaly edge, although appearances vary. It spreads through direct contact and shared towels, clothing, bedding, sports equipment, or other contaminated surfaces.

A clinician may diagnose it from the appearance and, when needed, examine skin scrapings. Conditions such as eczema can look similar, so avoid using a steroid cream alone on an undiagnosed scaly rash.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and do not share towels, clothing, hairbrushes, or bedding. Wash items that contact the rash and clean frequently touched surfaces. Check household members or pets for suspicious lesions if advised.

A limited infection may respond to topical antifungal treatment. Widespread, stubborn, scalp, or nail infection may need oral antifungal treatment. Complete the prescribed course even if the rash looks better, and do not use leftover medicine.

Seek medical review if the rash spreads, involves the scalp or nails, becomes painful or wet, or fails to improve with appropriate treatment. Get prompt advice if you have reduced immunity or if several household members develop similar symptoms.

Ask whether the rash needs a scraping test, which antifungal treatment fits its location, how long to use it, whether close contacts or pets need assessment, and how to reduce the chance of reinfection.
