What should you know about canine keratoacanthoma?

A keratoacanthoma often begins as a firm, rounded bump and may develop a central plug of hard keratin. It can enlarge over a short period and commonly appears on sun-exposed skin, although appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Sun-damaged skin may provide useful background when your clinician examines the area.

Because keratoacanthoma can look similar to squamous cell carcinoma, a clinician may recommend removing all or part of the lump for laboratory examination. Do not squeeze, cut, or apply home acids to it.

Arrange a dermatology appointment, especially if the lump is growing, crusting, bleeding, tender, or repeatedly catching on clothing. Note when it appeared, how quickly it changed, and whether you have had similar lesions. Bring a list of medicines that affect bleeding or healing.

Treatment is usually planned around complete removal and confirmation of the tissue diagnosis. Options may include curettage and cautery or surgical excision, depending on the lump’s size, site, borders, and the clinician’s assessment.

Seek prompt medical assessment for a rapidly enlarging lump or any lesion that bleeds without clear injury, becomes increasingly painful, develops an open sore, or changes noticeably. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.
