What should you know about Canfield dermoscopy?

A dermoscope combines magnification with controlled lighting so surface scale, colour patterns, and structures beneath the outer skin layer are easier to inspect. Canfield systems can capture images for a clinician to review during the visit or compare at a later appointment. The image supports examination; it does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

A dermatologist considers the lesion's appearance, location, change over time, symptoms, and your personal history. A camera image is not the same as a biopsy, and some lesions need tissue testing when their features remain uncertain.

Bring a list of changing moles, previous skin-cancer diagnoses, and medicines that affect your skin. Avoid picking or irritating the area before the appointment, and mention recent sun exposure or a new product. Ask whether images will be stored for comparison and which changes should prompt an earlier review. If removal is advised, discuss the procedure, wound care, and whether the tissue will be examined.

Arrange a skin assessment for a spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface, or one that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, itches, or fails to heal. Seek prompt medical advice for rapid change or persistent bleeding. Dermoscopy can help assess a concern, but waiting for imaging is not appropriate when a lesion is actively worsening.

Ask what features were seen, whether comparison images are needed, and what would make biopsy or removal sensible. Clarify how the result will be recorded and when you should return.
