The two reactions may appear together because they can involve related inflammatory pathways. Hives are usually raised, itchy areas on the surface of the skin, while angioedema tends to cause broader swelling in deeper tissue.

Angioedema may affect the lips, eyelids, cheeks, hands, feet, or genital area. The swollen area can feel tight, warm, or tender rather than itchy, although itch can occur when hives are present too.
