Can urinary tract infection cause prostatitis?

The prostate sits below the bladder and surrounds part of the urethra. Bacteria in the urinary tract can involve this gland, causing inflammation and infection. Prostatitis may bring burning urination, difficulty starting or maintaining the stream, frequent urges, pain between the scrotum and anus, pelvic discomfort, or pain with ejaculation. Fever and chills suggest a more acute illness.

Not every case of prostatitis is caused by bacteria; pelvic pain can have other explanations. A clinician may use your symptoms, examination, urine testing, and sometimes additional tests to distinguish these possibilities.

Arrange medical assessment if urinary symptoms persist, recur, or occur with pelvic pain. Tell the clinician about fever, trouble passing urine, discharge, recent procedures, and previous urinary infections. If bacterial prostatitis is diagnosed, treatment may require a prescribed antibiotic course and follow-up. Do not stop medicine early or take someone else’s prescription. Rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, and use only pain relief that is safe with your health conditions and medicines.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop high fever or shaking chills, become confused or faint, have severe pelvic pain, or feel rapidly worse. Prostate swelling can make urine flow difficult, and a serious infection can affect the whole body. Fever with new urinary blockage deserves same-day attention.
