Can topical corticosteroids cause perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis causes clusters of small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, or tightness around the mouth. The skin beside the lips may be spared, and similar bumps can occur around the nose or eyes. A corticosteroid may briefly reduce redness, then the rash can return or become more persistent when its effect fades.

This does not mean every facial rash is perioral dermatitis. Irritant reactions, acne, rosacea, and infection can resemble it, so the product, strength, location, and pattern all matter.

Contact the prescriber before stopping a corticosteroid used for an important inflammatory condition, particularly after regular or prolonged application. They may recommend a supervised reduction or an alternative, depending on the product and the condition being treated. Avoid restarting it on the face simply because it calms the rash briefly.

Use a gentle cleanser, pause fragranced or irritating products, and avoid picking the bumps. A clinician may prescribe treatment for perioral dermatitis after examining the skin.

Arrange a dermatology review for a rash that persists, spreads toward the eyes, burns, or repeatedly returns after steroid use. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, marked eyelid swelling, facial swelling, fever, pus, or rapidly worsening redness.

Ask whether the rash fits perioral dermatitis, whether your corticosteroid should be reduced or replaced, which products to stop temporarily, and what treatment is suitable for the mouth, nose, or eye area.
