Can strep throat cause tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis describes inflamed, swollen tonsils; strep throat describes infection with group A Streptococcus. They can occur together, but tonsillitis also has viral causes. Possible features include a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, tender neck glands, swollen red tonsils, or white patches. Cough, runny nose, and hoarseness make a viral cause more plausible, although symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical assessment when a sore throat is severe, lasts, or comes with fever and swollen tonsils. A rapid test or throat swab may be used when bacterial infection is suspected. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods; use pain relief only as suitable for the person and according to the label or medical advice. Do not share utensils, and wash hands regularly.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, or trouble opening the mouth. These symptoms can signal a complication near the tonsil. Prompt review is also needed for dehydration, a very unwell child, or symptoms that worsen despite treatment.

Ask whether the tonsils look more consistent with a viral or streptococcal infection, whether testing is appropriate, which pain-relief options fit your health, and when normal activities can resume.
