Can post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation cause dark underarms?

Underarm skin is exposed to moisture, movement and contact with deodorants, hair-removal products and clothing. Irritation or inflammation can stimulate extra pigment, which remains after the original problem improves. The colour may be brown, grey or deeper than nearby skin. PIH is not the only explanation for dark underarms: ongoing dermatitis, contact allergy, friction-related thickening and other conditions can look similar. A change in texture, itch or repeated flare gives useful clues.

Pause products that sting or cause a rash, and use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser. Shave with lubrication and a clean tool if shaving is necessary; avoid repeated passes over irritated skin. Reduce rubbing from tight clothing and let the area dry after washing. Do not apply harsh acids, bleach or abrasive scrubs. If a rash or ingrown-hair problem continues, a dermatologist can treat that trigger before recommending options for leftover pigment.

Arrange a review if darkening persists, keeps returning, or began without a clear irritation. Seek prompt medical advice for pain, swelling, drainage, marked itch or a spreading rash. Also mention dark, velvety thickening in the underarms or other folds, because it may signal a condition needing a different evaluation rather than simple PIH care.
