Can keloid scars be prevented?

A keloid is extra scar tissue that extends beyond the original wound. It may follow acne, piercing, surgery, burns, or a minor injury, and some people are more prone to forming one. Avoiding unnecessary skin trauma is helpful when you already know you develop raised scars. Acne lesions should be treated without squeezing or picking, because repeated inflammation can injure the skin.

If a wound occurs, keep it clean, covered as advised, and protected from rubbing while it heals. Do not apply harsh products or remove a scab forcefully. A scar that becomes firm, itchy, painful, or visibly enlarges beyond the wound deserves early assessment; treatment is often easier while the scar is still developing.

Tell a dermatologist or surgeon about previous keloids before a planned procedure or piercing. They can discuss whether the procedure is needed, how the incision may be closed, and whether preventive scar treatment is appropriate. Silicone-based dressings or gels, pressure, injections, or other measures may be considered for selected wounds; the choice depends on the site, healing pattern, and your skin history.

Use sun protection over a healing wound once your clinician says it is suitable, since darkening can make a scar more noticeable. Never start steroid creams, injections, or home freezing products on a fresh wound without guidance.

Arrange a dermatology review if a scar is spreading outside the original injury, repeatedly catching on clothing, becoming increasingly tender or itchy, or limiting movement near a joint. Seek prompt wound care for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or pain, because these can signal infection rather than normal scar maturation. Rapid change after a procedure should also be reported to the treating clinician.

Ask whether your past scars suggest a keloid tendency, which wound-care products suit the procedure, when scar treatment should begin, and how long monitoring should continue. If excision is discussed, ask how recurrence prevention would be combined with the procedure; removing a keloid alone may not address the tendency to regrow.
