Can intertrigo cause dark underarms?

Sweat, skin contact, tight clothing, shaving, and fragranced deodorants can irritate the underarm fold. During healing, pigment-producing cells may leave the area darker than before. The colour may accompany tenderness, redness, scaling, or a raw sensation when intertrigo is active. Dark underarms can also occur without a rash, including from other skin conditions or product irritation, so the appearance and texture matter when identifying the cause.

Wash gently and dry the underarms thoroughly. Wear breathable clothing and change after heavy sweating. Stop any deodorant, shaving product, or hair-removal method that burns or causes a rash, then reintroduce products cautiously only after the skin settles. Avoid abrasive scrubs and unlabelled lightening mixtures. If there is active redness or cracking, a clinician or pharmacist can advise treatment before you address leftover pigmentation.

Book an assessment if darkening is sudden, spreading, thickened, velvety, itchy, painful, or present in several body folds. Seek prompt help for pus, foul odour, rapidly expanding redness, fever, or significant swelling. Get urgent care for breathing trouble or swelling of the face after a deodorant or other product. A clinician can distinguish intertrigo from infection, contact dermatitis, or another cause.
