Can intertrigo cause skin yeast infection?

Intertrigo is irritation where skin touches skin, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, or between abdominal folds. Sweat and friction weaken the surface barrier. Candida can then multiply in the damp, inflamed area. A yeast-involved fold may be bright red, sore, moist, or cracked, with small separate spots just beyond the main rash. Other causes, including irritant dermatitis or bacterial infection, can look similar.

Gently wash the fold and dry it carefully, including after exercise or bathing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Avoid scrubbing, perfumed products, and sharing towels. Keep the fold separated with clean, dry fabric if advised. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose an antifungal treatment when yeast is suspected; use it as directed and do not rely on a steroid cream alone, which may disguise worsening infection.

Seek medical advice if the rash is painful, spreading, cracked, draining, foul-smelling, or not improving with careful drying. Prompt assessment is needed for fever, rapidly increasing redness, severe tenderness, or feeling unwell. Repeated episodes may need review of moisture, friction, medicines, or other health factors. Emergency help is appropriate for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after applying a product.
