Can hyperhidrosis cause tinea versicolor?

Tinea versicolor, also called pityriasis versicolor, may cause lighter, darker, or pinkish patches with fine scale, often on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck. The patches can become more noticeable after sun exposure because affected skin may not tan evenly. Mild itch can occur, but some people notice mainly the change in colour. Other causes of light or dark patches include inflammation, eczema, and pigment disorders, so appearance needs careful assessment.

Keep sweaty skin cool and dry, shower after heavy exercise, and change damp clothing. Choose breathable fabrics and avoid sharing towels or clothing. If a clinician confirms tinea versicolor, use the recommended topical treatment as directed; the yeast may clear before the skin colour becomes even again. Avoid scrubbing or using bleaching products, which can worsen irritation and make contrast more visible.

Arrange an examination when patches are spreading, scaly, itchy, inflamed, or not improving, or when the diagnosis is uncertain. Prompt care is appropriate for painful lesions, marked swelling, or fever. Repeated episodes can be discussed with a clinician, who can consider the pattern, sweating, and prevention options.
