Can a herniated disc cause cervical radiculopathy?

That nerve-root problem is called cervical radiculopathy. It may produce pain that travels from the neck into a shoulder, arm, or hand, sometimes with tingling, numbness, altered reflexes, or weakness in muscles supplied by the affected nerve.

Spinal discs sit between the neck vertebrae. When outer disc fibres weaken, disc material may extend toward the opening where a nerve root leaves the spine. Contact, pressure, and local inflammation can disturb that nerve's signals.

The pattern depends on which root is involved. A clinician compares the distribution of pain or altered sensation with muscle strength and reflexes. Neck movement can influence symptoms, but an examination is needed because shoulder disorders, peripheral nerve compression, and other conditions can produce overlapping complaints.

Arrange a clinical assessment if arm pain, tingling, or numbness persists, interferes with sleep or daily tasks, or is accompanied by weakness. Note which fingers are affected, what movements provoke symptoms, and whether grip or fine hand tasks have changed.

Care may include temporarily modifying aggravating activity, appropriate pain relief, and guided exercise to maintain comfortable neck and upper-limb movement. Imaging is not automatically required for every episode; it becomes more relevant when findings are severe, progressive, unusual, or likely to change treatment.

Seek prompt medical care for new or worsening arm or hand weakness, marked loss of sensation, or pain following significant trauma. Emergency assessment is appropriate if neck symptoms occur with difficulty walking, loss of hand coordination, changes in bladder or bowel control, or weakness affecting more than one limb, because the spinal cord may be involved.

Fever, feeling acutely unwell, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer or immune suppression should also be disclosed promptly because they broaden the possible causes of neck and arm symptoms.
