Can heart attack cause heart failure?

During a heart attack, part of the heart muscle loses its blood supply. Damaged muscle may contract less strongly, making it harder to circulate blood and manage fluid. The effect depends on the area affected and the speed of treatment. Heart failure can appear during the event, during recovery or later.

Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped. It describes reduced pumping or filling that can cause breathlessness, tiredness, ankle swelling or rapid weight change from fluid.

Keep every follow-up appointment and take cardiac medicines exactly as prescribed. Ask when rehabilitation, walking and other activity can begin, and report new breathlessness, swelling or reduced stamina. Limit salt only as advised, avoid smoking, and weigh yourself in a consistent way if your care team recommends monitoring fluid.

Get emergency help for new or severe chest pain, severe breathlessness at rest, fainting, confusion, blue lips or coughing pink frothy fluid. Contact your cardiac team promptly if swelling increases, you wake gasping or ordinary activity becomes suddenly harder.

Ask how much heart muscle was affected, whether an echocardiogram is needed, which warning signs to track, and how medicines and rehabilitation support recovery.
