Short answer

An ectopic pregnancy cannot always be prevented, but reducing certain infection-related risks and getting early care may help.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Prevention
Not every ectopic pregnancy has a preventable cause.
Risk reduction
Preventing and promptly treating pelvic infections may protect the fallopian tubes.
Safety
Pain, bleeding, faintness or shoulder-tip pain with possible pregnancy needs urgent assessment.

The short answer

Some ectopic pregnancies occur without a known avoidable cause. Prevention efforts cannot ensure where a fertilised egg implants, so recognising a pregnancy early and responding to warning signs remain essential.

How an ectopic pregnancy develops

An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilised egg implants outside the main cavity of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. A pregnancy in this location cannot develop normally and can cause dangerous internal bleeding if the tube ruptures.

Damage or narrowing in a tube can interfere with movement of the fertilised egg. Pelvic infection, previous tubal surgery and a previous ectopic pregnancy can raise risk, but their presence does not mean an ectopic pregnancy will occur.

Ways to reduce avoidable risk

Using barrier protection during sex and arranging testing when a sexually transmitted infection is possible can reduce infections that may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and tubal scarring. Complete any prescribed treatment and follow advice about partner testing or treatment.

After a positive pregnancy test, tell a clinician about previous ectopic pregnancy, tubal surgery, pelvic inflammatory disease or fertility treatment. They may arrange blood tests and an early ultrasound to locate the pregnancy. Monitoring finds an ectopic pregnancy sooner; it does not prevent implantation.

When to seek emergency care

Get urgent medical assessment for pelvic or abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, marked dizziness or weakness when pregnancy is possible. Symptoms may begin before a person knows they are pregnant.

Call emergency services for sudden severe pain, fainting, collapse, confusion or signs of shock such as pale, cold or clammy skin. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or seriously unwell.

Questions after a positive test

Ask when an ultrasound can reliably check the pregnancy's location, whether repeat hormone tests are appropriate, and exactly which symptoms should take you to emergency care. If you have had an ectopic pregnancy, also discuss a plan for monitoring the next pregnancy.

Questions people ask

Can ectopic pregnancy be prevented?

Not always. Avoiding pelvic infections may reduce one source of tubal damage, while early monitoring helps detect rather than prevent an ectopic pregnancy.

Does a previous ectopic pregnancy mean it will happen again?

No. It raises concern but does not determine the outcome of a future pregnancy; early contact with a maternity clinician allows timely location checks.

Can an ectopic pregnancy be moved into the uterus?

No. Treatment focuses on ending the ectopic pregnancy safely and preventing internal bleeding.
