Can demodex mites cause rosacea?

Demodex are microscopic mites that can live in facial hair follicles. When their numbers or activity become problematic, they may irritate the follicle and surrounding skin, contributing to redness, roughness, burning, or small inflamed bumps. Rosacea also has other possible drivers, including a sensitive skin response and vascular inflammation, so finding mites does not by itself establish a diagnosis. Similar facial changes can occur with acne, dermatitis, or irritation from skincare products.

Keep a simple routine with a gentle cleanser and a non-irritating moisturiser. Pause products that sting, scrub, or leave the face tight, and use sun protection that your skin tolerates. Record triggers such as heat, spicy food, alcohol, stress, or new cosmetics if flushing follows them. A dermatologist can examine the pattern and decide whether testing or a mite-targeted treatment is appropriate. Avoid using leftover steroid or anti-parasite creams on the face without advice.

Arrange an appointment for persistent facial redness, repeated flushing, burning, visible small vessels, or bumps that do not settle with gentle care. Seek prompt help for painful eye redness, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or swelling around the eye. Rapidly spreading facial swelling, fever, or pus also needs urgent assessment because it may indicate another condition.
