Can common cold cause middle ear infection?

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear with the back of the nose. During a cold, inflammation and mucus can narrow this passage. Airflow and fluid drainage then become less effective, creating pressure or fluid behind the eardrum. Germs may multiply in that trapped fluid, causing otitis media. Ear pain, reduced hearing, a blocked sensation, fever, or irritability in a young child can follow. A cold does not make every earache an infection; pressure from congestion can also cause discomfort without infected fluid.

Offer fluids and rest, and use age-appropriate pain relief exactly as directed on the label or by a clinician. Saline nose drops or spray may ease nasal blockage. Do not put oil, cotton buds, or unprescribed drops into the ear, especially if discharge is present. Children should not receive medicines intended for adults. A clinician can examine the eardrum and decide whether observation, pain control, or prescription treatment is suitable.

Arrange medical advice for significant ear pain, new hearing reduction, fever, symptoms that worsen, or discomfort that does not begin settling. Seek urgent help for swelling or redness behind the ear, severe headache, marked drowsiness, stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or trouble breathing. An infant who is unusually difficult to settle or feeds poorly also needs prompt assessment.

Ask whether the eardrum shows trapped fluid or infection, what pain relief fits the patient’s age and health, and which changes should prompt a follow-up visit. Ask how hearing should be monitored if blockage continues.
