Can common cold cause acute bronchitis?

A common cold affects the nose and throat. Acute bronchitis involves irritation and swelling of the larger airways in the chest, which can lead to a persistent cough, phlegm, wheezing or chest discomfort. The cough may continue after a blocked or runny nose has improved. Viruses commonly cause both illnesses, so antibiotics do not treat the viral cause.

Cough and mucus colour alone cannot show whether bronchitis is bacterial or whether pneumonia is present. A clinician may listen to your chest and consider your breathing, temperature and overall condition.

Rest, drink fluids and avoid cigarette smoke or other airway irritants. Warm drinks may soothe the throat, and a pharmacist can explain whether a suitable pain reliever or cough product is safe for you. Honey may soothe cough in adults and children over one year, but never give honey to an infant under one year.

Follow the label of any medicine and check before using it if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition or take regular medicines. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics.

Arrange medical assessment for breathing that is becoming harder, chest pain, coughing blood, dehydration, a high or persistent fever, or a cough that is worsening rather than settling. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion or inability to stay awake. People with asthma, chronic lung disease, significant heart disease, weakened immunity, or very young or older household members may need earlier advice.
