Can cellulitis cause sepsis?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin layers. Redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, and spreading skin changes can develop around a break in the skin. If bacteria or inflammatory signals move beyond the original area, the body can become seriously unwell; this is sepsis. People with weakened immunity, poorly controlled diabetes, circulation problems, or a very young or older age may need especially prompt assessment, but severe infection can affect anyone. Sepsis is a medical emergency, not simply a more painful patch of cellulitis.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or pain, particularly when fever or feeling unwell is present. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and mark the edge of redness with a pen so change can be noticed. Elevate an affected limb when resting if comfortable. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and complete the course unless a clinician changes it. Do not share antibiotics or use someone else’s medicine.

Call emergency services for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, clammy or mottled skin, a very fast heartbeat, or inability to stay awake. Urgent assessment is also needed when redness spreads quickly, pain is severe or out of proportion, blisters or dark skin appear, or you cannot keep fluids down. Sepsis can worsen quickly and needs hospital treatment.
