Can caesarean section cause placenta accreta?

Placenta accreta spectrum means placental tissue attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus. Healing after a caesarean can leave an area where the normal boundary between the placenta and uterine muscle is altered, allowing abnormal attachment in a future pregnancy.

The association does not mean that placenta accreta will develop after a caesarean. Placental position matters: concern is greater when the placenta lies low and overlaps or approaches a previous scar. Prior uterine operations and the full pregnancy history also guide assessment.

Tell your obstetric team about every previous caesarean or other operation on the uterus. Routine ultrasound identifies where the placenta is attached; if its position or appearance raises concern, the team may arrange targeted imaging and specialist review. Placenta accreta often causes no symptoms before delivery, so scheduled checks matter.

When accreta is suspected, care is planned in a hospital with an experienced multidisciplinary team and access to blood products, anaesthesia, neonatal support and pelvic surgery. Your clinician should explain the proposed timing and method of birth, bleeding preparations and the possibility that removing the uterus may be necessary to control haemorrhage.

Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy needs prompt maternity advice, even when it is light or painless. Seek emergency care for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, dizziness, fainting, breathlessness or feeling suddenly very unwell. Use the emergency plan given by your obstetric team if placenta accreta or a low placenta is already suspected.

Do not wait for bleeding as proof that something is wrong. Attend arranged imaging and specialist appointments because abnormal placental attachment may remain silent until birth.

Ask where the placenta lies in relation to the old scar, whether specialist imaging is needed, and which hospital is equipped for delivery. If accreta is suspected, request a clear explanation of the surgical plan, options for anaesthesia, blood management, newborn care and what symptoms should take you directly to emergency care.
