Can blocked fallopian tubes cause ectopic pregnancy?

A completely blocked tube may stop sperm and egg from meeting on that side. Ectopic pregnancy is more closely linked to partial obstruction or tubal damage that allows fertilisation but disrupts movement toward the uterus.

After fertilisation, the early embryo normally travels through a fallopian tube before implanting in the uterus. Scarring, narrowing or impaired tubal movement can delay that journey. Implantation may then occur in the tube, where a pregnancy cannot develop safely.

Tubal problems can follow pelvic infection, previous surgery, endometriosis or an earlier ectopic pregnancy. Some people have no warning symptoms before conception, so a known tubal problem should be discussed when planning pregnancy or after a positive test.

Contact a maternity or gynaecology clinician promptly if you know or suspect that a tube is blocked or damaged. They may arrange blood tests and an appropriately timed ultrasound to determine whether the pregnancy is developing inside the uterus. One early scan may be inconclusive, so follow-up can be needed.

Do not rely on the presence or absence of pain to locate a pregnancy. Avoid delaying assessment because symptoms feel mild, especially if you have bleeding, one-sided discomfort or a history of tubal disease.

Seek emergency care for sudden or severe abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, marked weakness or heavy vaginal bleeding when pregnancy is possible. These can signal internal bleeding from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.

Urgency is based on these warning signs, not on whether ectopic pregnancy seems likely. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell; use local emergency services.
