Can blocked fallopian tubes be prevented?

Scarring may follow pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, previous pelvic surgery, or other inflammation. Some of these causes can be addressed early, while others cannot be reliably predicted or prevented.

Fallopian tubes carry an egg toward the uterus and provide the usual place for egg and sperm to meet. Infection or inflammation can heal with adhesions or scarring that narrows a tube, closes it, or interferes with its movement. A blockage may affect one tube or both and may cause no obvious symptoms.

Pelvic inflammatory disease can damage the tubes, particularly when treatment is delayed. Endometriosis may also cause inflammation and adhesions around reproductive organs, but there is no dependable way to prevent every endometriosis-related blockage.

Use condoms to reduce exposure to sexually transmitted infections, arrange testing when exposure is possible, and complete prescribed treatment. Partners may also need testing or treatment to prevent reinfection. New pelvic pain, unusual discharge, bleeding between periods, or pain during sex warrants timely assessment because pelvic infection can be mild or silent.

Discuss persistent pelvic pain or painful periods rather than repeatedly self-treating symptoms. Early evaluation can identify endometriosis or another pelvic condition and support a care plan, although treatment cannot reverse all existing scar tissue.

Seek prompt medical care for lower abdominal pain with fever, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, or bleeding outside your expected period. Severe pain, faintness, vomiting, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding needs urgent assessment.

A fertility consultation is appropriate when pregnancy is not happening after regular unprotected sex. Clinicians may assess whether the tubes are open and evaluate ovulation, the uterus, and sperm factors rather than assuming blockage from symptoms alone.

You could ask whether infection testing is needed, which test can check tubal openness, whether your surgery or endometriosis history changes the assessment, and what a result involving one tube versus both tubes would mean for pregnancy planning.
