Can atrophic scars be prevented?

Atrophic scars are indentations caused when healing does not restore the usual support beneath the skin. Deep or prolonged inflammation can damage that support. Acne is a frequent setting, and chickenpox can also leave depressed marks when lesions are scratched or become inflamed. Your skin type, wound depth, infection, and individual healing response all influence the result. A flat dark mark is not the same as an atrophic scar because it reflects colour rather than loss of skin support.

Treat acne early with a clinician-guided plan and avoid squeezing spots. Let chickenpox blisters heal without picking, and keep broken skin clean and protected as it closes. For any wound, follow instructions for dressings and watch for infection. Do not use irritating home remedies on healing skin. If a new injury is deep, contaminated, or slow to close, medical assessment can help limit further tissue damage and guide aftercare.

Consult a dermatologist if an indentation is developing, acne is leaving repeated marks, or a scar is itchy, painful, or restricting movement. Get prompt care for a wound with spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, fever, or edges that are separating. Early review is useful because established depressions may need a different discussion from fresh healing skin.

Ask whether a mark is pigment or true tissue loss, how to control the condition causing new lesions, and which scar treatments are appropriate once the skin has fully healed.
