Can atopic dermatitis cause prurigo nodularis?

Prurigo nodularis causes raised, firm bumps that may become thick, scabbed, or darker after repeated scratching. Atopic dermatitis is one condition associated with this pattern, but not every itchy eczema patch becomes a nodule. Itch can prompt scratching; scratching injures the surface and makes the skin thicker and more reactive, which then sustains the urge to scratch. Nodules often occur where a person can reach, such as the arms, legs, or trunk.
