Can atopic dermatitis cause hypopigmentation?

Inflammation can temporarily disrupt pigment production or distribution in the skin. Scratching and rubbing may add to the colour difference. The lighter area often follows the shape of a previous eczema patch and may have mild dryness or fine scale. It is usually different from vitiligo, which can create sharply defined milky-white areas, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. The contrast may be easier to see after surrounding skin tans.

Control active eczema with the plan prescribed for you and moisturise regularly to reduce dryness and rubbing. Use shade and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin so the surrounding skin does not darken more than the lighter patch. Avoid bleaching products and harsh scrubs. Colour can return gradually as inflammation settles, although the timing differs between people and body areas.

Arrange an examination if a patch is spreading, completely white, sharply bordered, itchy without an eczema flare, or appearing in new areas. Seek care sooner if there is pain, crusting, discharge, or rapid change. A clinician can check for eczema and other causes of altered pigmentation and tailor treatment to your skin tone and symptoms.

Ask whether the colour change fits post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, how to manage the underlying eczema, and whether any examination or treatment is needed if the patch does not change over time.
