Can allergic rhinitis cause allergic conjunctivitis?

Allergic rhinitis affects the lining of the nose, causing sneezing, itching, a runny or blocked nose, and post-nasal drainage. Allergic conjunctivitis affects the eye surface and commonly causes itchy, watery, red, or puffy eyes. Pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander may trigger both sets of symptoms. Rubbing the eyes can increase irritation and may damage the eye surface. Eye pain or vision change is less typical and needs a different assessment.

Limit contact with known triggers, wash your face after outdoor exposure, and keep hands away from irritated eyes. Saline nasal rinsing may clear allergens when performed with safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antihistamine, nasal spray, or eye drops suited to your age, health, and other medicines. Avoid sharing towels and do not use someone else's prescription eye drops.

Get urgent eye care for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, marked swelling, an eye injury, or a sensation that something is stuck in the eye. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat swelling, or widespread hives after an exposure. Persistent discharge or symptoms in one eye may need review for infection or another cause.

Ask which triggers fit your pattern, whether your eye symptoms are allergic, which treatments can be combined safely, and how long to try them. Mention contact lens use, vision changes, eye pain, and symptoms that occur in only one eye.
