Can acne cause post-inflammatory erythema?

Inflammation from acne can temporarily alter small blood vessels and the surrounding skin. After the pimple flattens, the area may remain pink, red, or purplish, especially on lighter skin tones. This is post-inflammatory erythema, commonly called a red mark after acne. Unlike an atrophic scar, it does not create a depression; unlike hyperpigmentation, it is not primarily a brown or grey colour change.

New breakouts, picking, sun exposure, and irritating products can keep the skin inflamed and make the marks more noticeable. A clinician can check whether texture change, pigment, or another rash is also present.

Treat active acne so fresh inflammation does not keep producing marks. Cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid picking, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas. Introduce acne products gradually and stop products that burn or cause marked peeling. If redness persists or bothers you, a dermatologist may consider treatments such as vascular laser or other options after examining your skin and confirming the diagnosis.

Arrange an appointment if marks are spreading, persist alongside active acne, or come with pain, warmth, scaling, swelling, or bleeding. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, pus, severe tenderness, facial swelling, or fever, since those signs can indicate infection rather than a simple post-acne mark.

Ask whether the colour is erythema, hyperpigmentation, or a scar; how to control your acne; which products are least irritating; and whether a procedure is suitable for your skin.
