Can acne cause keloid scars?

A keloid is a firm, raised scar that grows beyond the boundary of the original skin injury. After acne, it may develop on the chest, shoulders, jawline, or other areas where keloids are more likely. It can feel itchy, tender, tight, or simply noticeable. A raised acne scar that stays within the original spot may be a hypertrophic scar instead, and a deep depression is a different type of scar.

Acne does not create keloids in everyone. Personal and family tendency, the depth of inflammation, and the location of the lesion can influence healing. A dermatologist can distinguish a keloid from an active cyst or another raised lesion.

Avoid squeezing active acne and do not pierce or cut a raised scar yourself. Arrange assessment early if a firm bump is enlarging, itching, or extending beyond the original blemish. Treatment may include steroid injections, silicone-based scar care, pressure methods, cryotherapy, or other specialist approaches; recurrence is possible, so the plan should be individualised. Managing ongoing acne also helps limit new injuries.

Make a dermatology appointment for any raised scar that grows past the original acne site, becomes painful, restricts movement, or repeatedly returns after treatment. Seek prompt care if redness spreads quickly, the area is hot or draining, or you have fever, because infection can resemble an inflamed scar.

Ask whether the growth is a keloid or another scar, whether your acne needs preventive treatment, which therapy fits its location, and how recurrence will be monitored.
