Cambridge Nutritional Sciences food intolerance test: what to know

How the structures involved in Food Intolerance differ from normal

Short answer

A Cambridge Nutritional Sciences food intolerance test may report reactions to selected foods, but a home result does not by itself diagnose intolerance or explain every symptom.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the result can and cannot tell you

Food intolerance describes difficulty handling a food or ingredient, often causing digestive symptoms rather than an immediate immune emergency. Commercial tests may measure markers in a sample, but a reported reaction does not always prove that eating the food causes symptoms. Food allergy is different and can cause rapid hives, swelling, wheeze or vomiting. Bloating and diarrhoea also have many possible causes, so a test result needs careful context.

Use the result carefully

Keep a food and symptom diary before removing foods. Record ingredients, portions, timing and symptoms, then discuss patterns with a GP or registered nutrition professional. Avoid excluding several foods at once, because this can make the pattern harder to interpret and may reduce nutritional variety. Do not use a home intolerance result to diagnose coeliac disease or food allergy, and do not reintroduce a food at home if it has caused swelling, breathing symptoms or a severe reaction.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, collapse or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. Arrange medical advice for persistent diarrhoea, blood in stool, ongoing vomiting, unintentional weight loss, night symptoms or significant abdominal pain. A clinician may review your history, arrange validated testing and check for conditions that can resemble food intolerance.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the test actually measured, whether the result is clinically meaningful, and which diagnoses should be considered first. Ask how to test a suspected food safely, whether you need a dietitian, and how to maintain adequate nutrition during any elimination and reintroduction plan.

Questions people ask

Can this test diagnose a food allergy?

It should not be treated as a stand-alone allergy diagnosis. Rapid swelling, wheeze, hives or collapse needs urgent medical assessment.

Should I cut out every food listed as reactive?

Avoid broad exclusions without professional advice. A structured history and supervised plan can reduce unnecessary restriction and nutritional gaps.
