Short answer

Calf and hamstring pain often reflects overload along the back of the leg, but sudden swelling, weakness, or severe injury signs need assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Back-of-leg muscles may be overloaded together during running and jumping.
Assessment clue
Tingling or electric pain can prompt a nerve and back examination.
Do not ignore
New one-sided calf swelling, warmth, or redness.

The short answer

The location and onset narrow the possibilities. Pain beginning during a sprint, jump, or sudden reach may indicate a muscle injury, whereas gradually increasing tightness after a training change more often fits overload. Symptoms traveling from the back or buttock may involve nerve irritation instead of two separate muscle problems.

How to read the symptoms

A hamstring strain commonly causes pain in the back of the thigh and may hurt with bending forward, accelerating, or lengthening the leg. Calf strain tends to hurt with pushing off, climbing stairs, or rising onto the toes. Bruising or a tender focal area can follow a muscle tear or direct blow.

Lower calf pain close to the heel may occur with Achilles tendon irritation. Burning, tingling, electric pain, or symptoms extending below the knee can lead a clinician to examine the lower back and nerves. One-sided swelling and warmth require a circulation check because they are not features to manage as routine tightness.

Early management

Stop sprinting, jumping, or heavy resistance work if it reproduces the pain. Walk only as comfortably as your gait allows, and avoid forceful stretching or deep massage over a fresh injury. As pain eases, gradual loading is usually more helpful than repeatedly testing the leg at full effort.

A physiotherapist or doctor can assess strength, flexibility, gait, tendon function, and nerve signs when discomfort persists or returns. Before the visit, note any pop, bruising, training increase, back pain, altered sensation, or difficulty pushing off the foot.

When care should not wait

Get urgent help if the calf becomes newly swollen, warm, red, or very tender without a clear muscle injury. Chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, or coughing blood alongside leg symptoms requires emergency care.

Seek prompt assessment after a forceful injury if you cannot bear weight, cannot bend the knee or push off, notice a visible muscle gap, or develop extensive swelling. New loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening leg weakness also warrants emergency evaluation.

What to discuss at your appointment

Clarify which structure appears irritated and whether the symptoms could come from the back or a nerve. Ask how to adjust running or gym work, when strengthening can begin, and what functional milestone should guide a return to sport.

Questions people ask

Why do my calf and hamstring hurt after running?

A rapid increase in pace, hills, distance, or sprinting can load both muscle groups beyond their current capacity. Footwear, running form, recovery, and previous injury can also shape the pattern.

Is massage suitable for calf and hamstring pain?

Massage may be considered for some muscle tightness during recovery, but deep pressure is unsuitable over a fresh tear, marked bruising, unexplained swelling, or a hot red calf. Those findings need clinical assessment first.
