Calamari food poisoning

Foodborne illness may follow contaminated seafood, inadequate cooking, or unsafe storage. Symptoms can begin after eating and may affect the stomach and bowel. The exact cause cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone, and other infections can look similar.

Vomiting and diarrhoea can remove water and salts from the body. Watch for thirst, a dry mouth, dark urine, reduced urination, dizziness, or unusual weakness, especially in children, older adults, and people with chronic illness.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. If vomiting settles, add bland foods gradually and avoid alcohol, rich meals, and foods that worsen symptoms. Wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and keep details of the meal and anyone else affected.

Seek urgent care for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, persistent vomiting, or breathing difficulty. Medical review is also sensible for high fever, symptoms that do not improve, or illness in someone vulnerable. IV fluid therapy may be needed when drinking cannot replace losses.
