Cafe au lait spots images: what to look for

The colour may be lighter or darker than an online example because skin tone, lighting, camera settings, and recent sun exposure alter contrast. The outline can be oval or irregular, while the surface generally remains level with nearby skin. Images cannot reliably show whether a mark is new, whether it is changing, or whether similar lesions are present elsewhere. A clinician compares the mark with the surrounding skin and considers its history before naming it.

Use daylight or even indoor light, keep the camera parallel to the skin, and include one wider image showing the body location plus a closer image showing the border. Avoid filters and heavy shadows. Add the date and note symptoms such as itch, pain, scale, or bleeding. Do not diagnose yourself from a search image. If appearance bothers you, ask about camouflage or pigment-targeting options; picosecond laser treatment may be suitable for some brown lesions after assessment.

Arrange a review if the mark is changing in size, shape, or colour, becomes raised, or develops crusting, bleeding, persistent itch, or pain. An in-person check is especially useful for new adult-onset marks, multiple new lesions, or pigment changes that are difficult to photograph accurately.
