Are cafe au lait spots genetic?

A single cafe au lait spot does not establish a genetic disorder. In some families, a gene change can influence pigment and other body systems, with relatives showing different features or none at all. Clinicians consider the pattern of marks, other skin signs, eye findings, nerve symptoms, bone concerns, and developmental history. The absence of a known family history does not rule out an inherited condition because a change can arise for the first time in a family or remain unrecognised.

Make a simple family skin history: note relatives with similar marks, freckling, benign growths, vision concerns, or a diagnosed inherited condition. Bring photographs and a list of when the marks appeared. A dermatologist may recommend monitoring, an eye examination, or genetics advice based on the complete picture; genetic testing is not automatically needed for every isolated mark. Cosmetic treatment can be considered separately, including discussion of picosecond laser treatment for selected lesions.

Seek review when several marks are present, new lesions continue to appear, or a mark is accompanied by freckling in unusual areas, a new lump, persistent pain, vision change, weakness, or concerns about development. Prompt assessment is also sensible for a rapidly changing, bleeding, crusted, or persistently painful lesion. These signs call for examination, not a conclusion based on appearance alone.
