What should you know about C2O laser resurfacing?

CO2 laser energy is absorbed by water in skin cells, allowing a clinician to remove or heat targeted layers. This can stimulate new surface skin and collagen remodelling, which may soften uneven texture, fine lines, acne scars, and some sun-damaged changes. Ablative treatment removes more surface tissue and generally needs more healing; fractional treatment leaves untreated skin between microscopic treatment columns and may allow a different recovery pattern. Thulium laser treatment uses a different wavelength and may be chosen for more superficial pigment or texture concerns.

A consultation should cover your goals, skin tone, tendency to form raised scars, cold-sore history, medicines, and recent tanning. Follow instructions about sun protection and prescribed preparation. After treatment, expect redness, heat, swelling, peeling, or crusting for a period that depends on the depth and area treated. Use only the cleanser, ointment, moisturiser, and sun protection recommended for your recovery. Do not pick flakes or resume active skincare until advised. Chemical peel treatment may be an alternative for selected concerns, but it is not interchangeable with laser settings.

Contact the treating clinician for worsening pain, increasing warmth, pus, spreading redness, fever, new blisters, significant swelling, or delayed healing. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling involving the mouth or throat, or severe eye symptoms. Protect treated skin from direct sun while it is recovering.

Ask whether CO2 or another laser is appropriate for your concern, which treatment depth and pattern will be used, what recovery will involve, and how pigment changes or scarring will be managed. Ask about antiviral preparation when you have had cold sores and when normal skincare, exercise, and sun exposure can resume.
