What should you know about c-MET overexpression in NSCLC?

MET is involved in signals that influence cell growth and survival. A pathology laboratory can assess protein expression with immunohistochemistry, while separate molecular methods are used to look for gene changes that may be relevant to a particular medicine.

The report may describe how intense the membrane staining is and how widely it appears across tumour cells. The laboratory's scoring method and the treatment question matter, so a label such as high expression should be read with the report's stated criteria.

Protein overexpression, MET amplification, and a MET exon-skipping alteration are different findings. They can overlap, but one does not prove another. This distinction matters because treatment eligibility may depend on a specified molecular result rather than protein staining alone.

Ask whether the tumour has had broad molecular profiling and whether the available sample was adequate. The cancer team interprets MET findings with the cancer's stage, previous treatment, overall health, other biomarkers, and the exact laboratory method.

Do not change treatment because of the phrase c-MET overexpression alone. Depending on the full results, the plan may involve targeted therapy, immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination. If more tissue is needed, the team should explain why another biopsy could alter the decision.

Contact the cancer team promptly for a new or worsening cough, increasing breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, or symptoms that interfere with eating, drinking, sleep, or usual activity. The urgency comes from the symptom and its severity, not from the biomarker score.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, fainting, new confusion, sudden weakness, or blue or grey lips. Follow the treatment team's urgent-contact instructions if therapy is already under way.

Ask how c-MET was measured, what the score represents, and whether MET amplification or an exon-skipping alteration was tested separately. Also clarify which result guides the proposed treatment, whether other actionable biomarkers were found, and whether the pathology should be reviewed when results appear discordant.
